Day by Day

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Dar es Salaam

Touch down at Julius Nyerere International Airport, where a warm welcome awaits. Transfer to your comfortable hotel and relax after your flight. If time allows, explore Dar es Salaam’s vibrant atmosphere, perhaps sampling local cuisine or browsing a craft market. Enjoy dinner and a restful evening, preparing for the days ahead.

Day 2: Flight to Selous (Nyerere National Park)

After breakfast, head back to the airport for a domestic flight to Selous Game Reserve, now part of Nyerere National Park. The aerial view showcases winding rivers, vast plains, and lush woodlands. Upon landing, a short drive brings you to your safari camp or lodge. After lunch, venture out on your first game drive, observing giraffes, zebras, and, with a bit of luck, African wild dogs roaming the wilderness. Round off the day around the campfire, listening to nature’s evening chorus.

Day 3: Exploration of Selous—Boat Safari & Game Drive

Begin the morning with a thrilling game drive when wildlife is most active. Keep your eyes peeled for elephants browsing in the woodlands, lions resting under shady trees, and an abundance of birdlife along the waterways. Return to camp for lunch, then spend the afternoon on a leisurely boat safari along the Rufiji River. Glide past pods of hippos and watch crocodiles basking on sandy banks. As the sun sinks low, savor the changing colors of the sky before returning to camp for dinner under the stars.

Day 4: Walking Safari & Sunset Drive

Today, embrace an on-foot encounter with the African bush. A guided walking safari offers a more intimate perspective, highlighting tracks, smaller creatures, and the flora that supports the larger ecosystem. Learn about traditional uses of plants and get closer to nature’s subtle details. Spend the afternoon relaxing at your camp before setting out on a sunset drive, scanning for nocturnal creatures that appear under the cover of darkness.

Day 5: Transfer to Ruaha National Park

After breakfast, say farewell to Selous and transfer by light aircraft to Ruaha National Park, Tanzania’s largest and one of its least visited wildlife havens. A scenic flight reveals shifting terrains—from dense miombo forests to rolling hills. Arrive at your lodge or camp in time for a leisurely lunch. Later, head out for a short game drive, noting Ruaha’s signature baobab trees and ample wildlife—including large lion prides and numerous elephants—before settling in for the evening.

Day 6: Full-Day Game Drives in Ruaha

Spend a full day uncovering Ruaha’s hidden treasures. Morning hours often reveal lions on the hunt or shy leopards perched in the branches of acacia trees. You may spot roan and sable antelopes—rare sightings in other Tanzanian parks—along with troops of playful baboons. Retreat to camp for a hearty lunch, followed by another game drive in the late afternoon. Share safari stories over dinner before falling asleep to the hush of the African night.

Day 7: Scenic Safari & Bush Walk

Begin another day in Ruaha with an early game drive, searching for elephants crossing dry riverbeds and buffalo herds grazing on open grasslands. Return to camp for lunch, then embark on a bush walk if conditions allow, delving deeper into Ruaha’s natural rhythms. Your guide will offer insights into the region’s ecology and culture, making for a fascinating, immersive experience. As night falls, savor your final evening in this remote wilderness.

Day 8: Flight to Zanzibar

Wake up to the sounds of Ruaha’s wildlife one last time. After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for your flight to Zanzibar. Upon arrival, a driver will take you to your beach resort, where palm-fringed shores and gentle waves await. The afternoon is yours to unwind. Dip into the Indian Ocean, lounge by the pool, or simply stroll along powdery sands while the breeze rustles through the palm trees.

Day 9: Stone Town & Spice Tour

Travel to Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that reflects centuries of Arab, Persian, Indian, and African influences. Wander the maze-like streets, pausing at bustling bazaars and admiring ornate doorways that tell stories of the island’s storied past. A guided spice tour follows, revealing how cloves, cinnamon, and other aromatic gems shaped Zanzibar’s history. Round off the day with a seaside meal or a sunset walk along the promenade.

Day 10: Coastal Leisure & Snorkeling

Indulge in a full day of beach bliss. Relax on soft sands, snorkel in turquoise waters teeming with colorful fish, or arrange a scuba dive to explore nearby coral reefs. Warm ocean currents and vibrant marine life make Zanzibar a diver’s dream. If you prefer to stay on land, savor fresh coconuts under the shade of palm trees and enjoy laid-back island living.

Day 11: Optional Activities & Island Exploration

Today offers the freedom to discover more of Zanzibar at your own pace. Choose a dhow cruise for a unique perspective on the coastline, visit Jozani Forest to spot rare red colobus monkeys, or explore local villages for an authentic taste of Swahili culture. As evening arrives, relish a final sunset—an unforgettable blend of swirling reds, oranges, and pinks dancing across the horizon.

Day 12: Departure from Zanzibar

A final morning on Zanzibar allows for a leisurely breakfast and perhaps one last swim in the ocean. A transfer will then take you to Zanzibar International Airport for your onward flight. Leave Tanzania with a heart full of memories, from the vast plains and baobab-studded landscapes of the south to the breezy shores of Zanzibar’s Indian Ocean paradise.
