Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park

Overview

Nestled at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park is a scenic treasure that packs a surprising variety of habitats into a relatively small area. Its mosaic of dense forests, grassy floodplains, and the alkaline lake itself offers diverse game viewing and stunning landscapes.

Tree-Climbing Lions

One of the park’s most famous residents is the tree-climbing lion. While seeing lions perched in branches is rare elsewhere, in Lake Manyara, it’s not uncommon to spot them lounging gracefully above the forest floor—perhaps to escape insects or to survey potential prey from a higher vantage point.

Flamingo Haven

During certain times of the year, thousands of flamingos fringe the lake’s shallow waters, creating a vivid pink spectacle. Pelicans, storks, and other waterfowl also congregate here, making Lake Manyara a prime destination for bird enthusiasts.

Scenic Highlights

Lake Manyara sits against a dramatic backdrop of towering cliffs and verdant forests. From hippos wallowing in the shallows to troops of baboons scurrying across forest paths, each turn in the road reveals a new panorama or wildlife encounter. The park’s groundwater forests are lush and cool, a stark contrast to the open plains found elsewhere in northern Tanzania.

Best Time to Visit

  • June to October (Dry Season): Great for spotting large mammals as they gather around water sources.
  • November to May (Green Season): Lush landscapes, fewer visitors, and often better birdwatching opportunities, including more flamingos when water levels are right.

Accommodation

Options range from eco-friendly lodges perched on the Rift Valley edge to intimate tented camps closer to the park entrance. Many properties offer sweeping views of the lake and escarpment, enhancing the park’s already picturesque setting.

Lake Manyara National Park may be smaller compared to its neighboring reserves, but it leaves a lasting impression with its remarkable scenery, unique tree-climbing lions, and vibrant birdlife. A visit here blends perfectly into any Northern Circuit itinerary, offering a refreshing and intimate safari experience.
